The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let the God of my salvation be exalted. Psalm 18:46
As shape adds dimension to line, so form adds depth to shape, progressively revealing a more complete picture. Likewise, it is the depth of God’s promises to Abraham that reveals the future form of His unfolding work in salvation. Continuing His covenant with the faithful seed of the woman, from Adam to Seth to Noah to Shem, God calls Abraham to be the one through whom God will redeem a people for Himself. In covenant with Abraham, God adds these promises to those He gave before: the inheritance of a glorious land; countless descendants, including kings, through whom all the families of the earth will be blessed (Genesis 12:1-3; 15:5; 17:6-7); and the assurance that He will be their God and they will be His people. From Abraham on, the narrowing line and expanding scope of the woman’s seed is defined by faith (Romans 4:13-25), as seen in the blessing of Isaac (Genesis 17:17-21) as heir to God’s covenantal promise of a people and a land.
