We commonly think of rock as the solid foundational element of the earth, and it is most frequently used in the Bible to symbolize the strength, steadfast faithfulness, and unchanging nature of God (2 Samuel 22:2, 32, 47; Psalm 95:1; Isaiah 17:10; 44:8). When Moses struck the rock that God stood upon at Massah, thus bringing life-giving water to the complaining and unbelieving Israelites (Exodus 17:5-7), the rock was symbolic of God and it prefigured Christ, His incarnate and blameless Son who endured the punishment of the cross for the sins of the world (1 Corinthians 10:4).

He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and with-out injustice; righteous and upright is He. Deuteronomy 32:4

At ground level where our perspective is limited by the horizon, the elevation range between the world’s lowest and highest points seems great. Yet compared to the earth’s circumference, it is almost too small to measure—so small, in fact, that it is accurately represented by the thickness of the cover paper on a common twelve-inch globe.

In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land. Psalm 95:4-5

He has made the earth by His power; He has established the world by His wisdom, and stretched out the heaven by His understanding. Jeremiah 51:15
