HIGHER VISION WORKSHOPS & TOURS
Higher Vision workshops and tours are designed to elevate your photography and strengthen your faith through seeing and sharing the glory of God revealed in the beauty of his creation. As such, they are not spiritually neutral experiences; but neither are they “plein-air” sermons. Because God’s revelation is self evident, my focus is teaching photography, not theology. Yet I can’t help but point at his beauty around us because, like C. S. Lewis, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” That vision is the bedrock of my photography, and apart from it I have no vision worth sharing.
Yet my desire is not to clone my vision, but to help you identify and develop your unique point of view, and give you the photographic skills to “speak your mind’s eye” most effectively. The Higher Vision goal is to elevate our visual communication to better share our thoughts and feelings, and to increase our mutual understanding of each other, the world, and God. For, in the words of writer and photographer David Vestal, “We are all alike, so we can understand each other; and we are all different, so we have things to tell each other. The sameness makes communication possible, and the difference makes it worthwhile.” So true, and so well said.
To that end, all Higher Vision programs focus first and foremost on the art of intentional seeing instead of Photoshop skills. Post processing is important – and we will cover it – but it is useless without a good foundational image. There is more to say about this that I’ll reserve for a future blog post, but for now we’ll simply follow Maria’s advice from The Sound of Music, “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start” … and that is the A-B-C’s and DO-RE-MI’s of successful seeing!
More to come …
